On January 24th, 2021, a HIFU Therapy Seminar was held at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Vietnam. The theme of the seminar was “HIFU Technology in the Treatment of Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH)”. Well-known attendees of the seminar include Dr. LE DINH KHANH (Vice President of the Hospital of Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy and President of Vietnam Urology–Nephrology Association), Professor Đàm Văn Cương (Vice President of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy), as well as many other famous Vietnamese scholars, experts and urological doctors.
During the seminar, Professor Đàm Văn Cương introduced the advantages of HIFU technology in the treatment of BPH, which can be concluded as follows:
- HIFU treatment for BPH is non-invasive. There is no need of anesthesia during the HIFU treatment. Since it is an outpatient treatment procedure, hospitalization will be excluded, which can help patients save time and money.
- There is no bleeding during the entire BPH treatment, which greatly eliminates the side effects such as urinary incontinence or bleeding. Patients will recover very soon after the HIFU treatment.
- HIFU treatment is by now one of the safest ways to treat BPH effectively around the globe.
HIFU-2001 of WIKKON installed in Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy has been used to treat hundreds of local patients with cancers or BPH diseases with excellent efficacy.
The surgical demonstration during this seminar was a 76-year-old elderly with prostate hyperplasia and dysuria. After three sessions of HIFU treatment, the patient can urinate normally now. The quality of his life has been significantly improved after the treatment.
High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) treatment is a new kind of therapy approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It can treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) safely and effectively. The work principle of HIFU technology is to focus high-intensify ultrasound beams on one point to generate temperature of 60-100 degrees Celsius. The prostate hyperplasia tissue will be burned at this high temperature. Since the heat lasts less than 4 seconds, it will not damage surrounding tissues.
